Torrefaction Samples & Trials
One of the key reasons we developed our demonstration facility in Lumber City, Goergia, is so we can provide samples of thermally treated biomass, in meaningful quantities, tuned to your requirements. We have access to local mill-run southern yellow pine, which we can thermally treat to achieve whatever your requirements are. Smaller samples are available upon request, provided you pay for shipping, while larger, custom material runs can also be arranged for a fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
We offer samples for all levels of torrefaction, in chip or pellet form. Our standard feedstock is mill-run, local southern yellow pine. Contact us for pricing and more information.
-
Yes! We understand that it’s critical for you to understand how torrefaction will affect your feedstock. We are happy to run you material - for a minimum run, we ask for three tons, in chip form, at 10% (or lower) moisture content.
-
It depends on how much you need to run and what you are looking to learn from it. This is not a commercial mill, and we did not establish the facility, so the costs of the samples cover any raw material, up-keep for the machine and contribute to recovery of the capital that made this possible.
-
You will be able to get a first-hand look at the impact of torrefaction on your feedstock. In addition to lab data (see below), we welcome you to visit us while we run your test and observe the trial. In addition, we will share with you operational parameters and a report on the operation of the equipment. However, some operational information will not be able to be shared.
-
We have a small lab onsite and also collaborate with an accredited third-party test lab. The tests we run are up to you and we charge on a per-test basis depending on the test and where it is performed. Remember for comparison that we need to take control and processed samples.

Additional testing on both the gases and biomass can be coordinated with external labs.

After torrefying or pyrolyzing the test sample, we can pellet with our on-site pelleting equipment. Depending on the material and your requirements, we can use a traditional pellet mill, or a state-of-the-art direct drive mill and introduce binders, moisture, etc.
If you need to perform pellet trials or use other agglomeration methods, we can help coordinate the next step of your material processing as well.

The spectrum of carbonized biomass is wide - from lower-temperature torrefaction to higher temperatures pyrolysis, we can do it all.
Typically, the lower range of thermal treatment is ideal for increasing teh CV and grindability of biomass to make iit suitable for therrmal applications.
Higher treatment levels concentrate the carbon and remove volatile organic compounds. enabling biomass to be used in reductant applications, for example, in the metallurgical sector.
It between exists a wide range of applications, including biofuel feedstock and PCI co-firing.
